Thursday's titanic video

As we are still on the topic of the history of Irish weightlifting, I thought I would post this video that I made earlier today. In 1999, a group of Irish weightlifters including Wayne Healy, Joe Kerr, Jimmy Power and David Daly went to compete in Athens for the Senior men's World Weightlifting Championships. They were coached by the inimitable John McDaid and he actually recorded a fair bit of footage from the competition. I got the dvd off Wayne and took the liberty of editing it and here it is. Each of the lifters except Daly are shown competing and there are also a few training lifts at the end, one of which shows Wayne Snatching 120kg and Cleaning 145kg a few days after competing in the 62kg class. Hopefully you enjoy the video. I know we can get to the stage where we have a number of lifters competing in the World Championships again. The standard is 335 sinclair points. Now, we have to train with intelligence and intensity in order to get there.

In my own training, I had another laid back session in my recovery week. Tommy Hayden was in Hercs and he had a look at my Snatching. I was working my my technique and getting proper extension and keeping the bar close while also trying with a wider than usual grip. I have a long way to go. I did lots of doubles and ended up with two easy singles with 100kg. I then Front Squat and Jerked up to 130 and after a paltry attempt at 140, left it there. I did around twenty minutes of self-myofacial release on my cardboard roller that Colin Bell so graciously gave me; I then had a ten minute sauna and was done for the day.

Great vid, loving the leotards! Wayne's 120kg snatch and 145kg clean were awesome. Just goes to show how far Irish lifters can go with persistence and hard work.

I am very confident that Ireland will have lifters back at the Worlds very soon, the overall standard of lifting is improving all of the time. We have a couple of lifters regularly hitting 320-330 sinclair, with a few more over the 300-310 so the future is bright providing people keep pushing the limits.

Well said Cthal, This is a great video!! Why have we never seen this before? Could we organise to put it up on the forum to serve as motivation for all our lifters!!

A wise friend of mine told me once that one can tell how much a coach knows about their sport by looking at the students technique! Fair play to Wayne and due regards to Tommy also!

Fascinating stuff Barry. I have some old vhs footage from about 2002 ( i think)of Pete Stewart, Joe Kerr, Lawrence, Tomas Banford etc than i am endeavouring to put on youtube. Quality of vidoes will be poor, but the lifting excellent!I have also by pure fluke, made indirect contact with Paul Ross who we think has some gems dating back to the 70s. I agree with Cathal Byrd. Another man to watch is Brendan Flanagan in Masters. AT present he is lifting well within his capabilities. But he is capable so much much more. All he needs is coaching and a bit of encouragement. Barry check my post in the Forum - there is a Dubliner wanting to take up the sport.

Thanks Lads!!!...Still have that leotard..would fit you nicely with those big arms you have Cathal!!!!:)
I believe that the lifters we have at moment (men & ladies) have more potential to achieve a higher standard than achieved in past. Just need to continue with good training, support & belief.

Thank God leotard design has improved. I wouldn't fancy wearing one of those with the present state of my gut!!
