Tuesday's tricky nervous system

I hit a bit of a wall today. The session was tough: I was tired after yesterday's squats and I should have tailored it more accordingly. I was feeling good all day so I thought I could be a bit more aggressive with the Snatch. This did not prove to be the case. Zag was pretty wrecked also, and he was in a rush, so his lifting was in a similar vein to my own. I knew this wold come, so now I have to be smart and just get on with it I suppose. Here is what I did:

Snatch--1x2@40, 40, 40, 60, 80 1x1@90, 90, 100, 100--The second rep was a little better, but it was ugly as sin. It is encouraging that I can still hit 85% when I am as co-ordinated as Bambi on ice.

Power Clean and Jerk--Again, I Power Cleaned because my calves are still sore. I worked up to a single with 100, and then promptly left the gym. I need to regroup the 'auld energy. Tomorrow will be light Snatch and the recovery squat session. I am looking forward to being more sensible.

Here is a video of Cathal Byrd's new pr Snatch:

Or maybe it is this one; not sure really...Is there a progression here if we are being honest?

The only progression there is 7kg of body weight (2kg in the biceps, 5kg in the calves)...and a dodgy beard.

You need to get some soft tissue (massage) work done on your calves man........take some ice baths as well and stretch like a bastard.

Boy to a man. The only problem is I'm still on the boys weights. Good to know for guys like myself that the progress can be made with a lot of work. Barry what you thinking of starting with at weekend? Robbie

Colin, I have gone to many massage therapists and they all say the same thing...my calves are just too big. You're right though, I do need to stretch them regularly, they are quite stiff from over 10 years of soccer. Due to my own specific anthropometrics (tibia is quite long compared to my femur) though, I don't think I will ever have exceptionally flexible ankles/calves but it is just a matter of maintaining what I have developed over the last few years and trying to improve bit by bit.

True Coach Lee, I was skinny. But ridiculously strong and fast...that EU comp in 2007 was quite a testing first international. That 85kg was my third attempt having missed it twice already so I needed it to avoid bombing. I couldn't understand what was happening as I had made 90kg a couple of weeks beforehand in training. Just goes to show what such a daunting environment (e.g. lifters power snatching your clean and jerk in warm-up)can do to the psychology of the in-experienced.

It is only recently (maybe the last year or so) that I have learned how to block out what other lifters are doing in the warm-up and focus solely on my own lifting.

Byrdman - Chea's complaining you tole his mojo when you came to London!

Apologies to Chris! I did no such thing though, I would never steal. Borrow maybe, but never steal...When are the English C'ships? I can FexEx his mojo back to London for that! Hope all your lads are preparing well for it.

Trip to the 'Emerald Isle' sounds great. Do you have any dates in particular in mind? May would probably be best as the Europeans & Irish nationals are in April.

Anyone else have any thoughts on this??

English are 2 weeks on Saturday...

Mark was definately up for it, Chris is persuadable... and I'll just use my Jedi mine tricks on Koing.

May would be good as it's a month out from the British/Commonwealth Trials. You should speak to Steve Cannon and see whether you can guest...

edit: 'FedEx', not FexEx, sounds like a dodgy porno...

Cool, would love to lift as a guest. I tried last year but Chris Freebury said that they weren't accepting guests, but maybe they will this year.

If 3 or 4 of ye could get over for a few days I'm sure we would all benefit from the environment.

May sounds great, so let's sort it out and have it to look forward to.

I was just looking at some CA Strength stuff this week and thinking how great a place it would be to train for a while. Keep me in the loop, I could be interested (May might be good).
